Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang, also known as the Kingdom of Lo, is a remote and culturally rich region located in the northern part of Nepal.

Location:

Upper Mustang is situated in the Himalayas of Nepal, bordering Tibet. It lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, resulting in a unique desert-like landscape.

Restricted Area:

Upper Mustang was a restricted area until 1992, and even now, it requires a special permit to visit. The permit is issued by the Nepalese government and is obtained through a registered trekking agency. This controlled access has helped to preserve the cultural heritage and pristine beauty of the region.

Cultural Heritage:

Upper Mustang is known for its rich Tibetan Buddhist culture and ancient traditions. It was once a part of the Tibetan Empire and still retains its distinct Tibetan influence. Trekking Route:

The trek to Upper Mustang is a remarkable adventure that takes you through barren landscapes, deep canyons, and stunning rock formations. The trek usually starts from Jomsom, a town accessible by flight or road from Pokhara. The route follows the Kali Gandaki River and passes through picturesque villages like Kagbeni, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang.

Lo Manthang:

Lo Manthang is the cultural and administrative center of Upper Mustang. It is an ancient walled city with narrow alleys, traditional houses, and a majestic palace. The city is home to the King of Mustang, who still holds a ceremonial position.

Unique Landscape:

Upper Mustang showcases a distinct desert-like landscape, with arid valleys, eroded cliffs, and colorful rock formations. The region is also known for its “moon-like” terrain, with vast stretches of barren land and unique geological formations.

Tiji Festival:

The Tiji Festival is one of the major cultural events in Upper Mustang. It is a three-day annual festival celebrated in Lo Manthang during May. The festival is a vibrant display of masked dances, ancient rituals, and colorful costumes that depict the victory of good over evil.

Accommodation:

Along the trekking route, there are basic tea houses and lodges that provide accommodation and meals for trekkers. Facilities may be more limited compared to other popular trekking regions in Nepal.

Weather and Best Time to Visit:

Due to its location in the rain shadow, Upper Mustang experiences less rainfall, making it suitable for trekking even during the monsoon season (June to August). The best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is generally clear and favorable.
